Bystander

Bystander

A Poem by Joey Martinez

You love to talk but you never listen
Her countless warnings and suspicions have come out the dark and have begun to glisten
It’s out in the open but you provide the poison instead of the potion
You hear her words but ironically they go unheard
She’s your earth but you treat her like an exiled planet without any worth
But she’s too scared to depart because the fear of being alone will tear her apart
So she settles for less and disregards the mental mess this relationship has addressed
This game of chess has our queen falling off board and drowning herself in a shore of anxiety and regrets
Afraid of her own reflection because she’s turning into someone she can’t accept
There’s nothing I can do
I’m just a bystander who can see right through the lies
The eyes never lie
I’d love to help but I’m gonna mind my business and walk on by...
