Never Forget

Never Forget

A Poem by Meridian
"

Dedicated to El Hajj Malik El Shabazz aka Malcolm X (May 19, 1925 February 21, 1965)

"

The man, he DROPPED
verbal gems, like jewel-encrusted keys
to unlock the chains of the bound --
bound by ignorance, bound by indifference.
The man, he DROPPED
necessary knowledge like food to nourish
the starving pride of a nation
that even TODAY needs to be spoon-fed.
The man, he DROPPED
his vices and shed his snake-like skin
to be reborn to allow the glow from within
to light the way for so many lost.
The man, he DROPPED
barriers like roadblocks made of smoke,
and brought so many others to see
the true value of their self-worth.
The man, he DROPPED
the jaws of those on the inside looking out,
of those who couldn’t believe his “audacity”;
some jaws, even, of his own brethren.
The man, he DROPPED
all opposition, even when the enemy
stepped out of the cloak of kinship
and tried to massacre his babies.
The man, he DROPPED
not one beat, continuing his struggle
in spite of the vicious attack on his family,
despite knowing that the end was near.
And when that end came rushing in,
the man, he DROPPED
in front of those babies he fought so viciously to protect,
in front of his wife and the bond of honor and respect.
The man,
in the name of truth, he
DROPPED.
A man,
in the name of pride, he
DROPPED
This man, DROPPED
in the name of love....
Love for our people

Let us never forget.

"It is a time for martyrs now, and if I am to be one, it will be for the cause of brotherhood. That's the only thing that can save this country."
-- February 19, 1965 (2 days before he was murdered by Nation of Islam followers)
