Motivation

A Poem by Meridian

Please tell me what your motivation is.
Everybody has a destination, a plan,
Whether you are woman, or man.
What is yours?
Do you assume that life is simply to be lived?
Get a good job, buy a nice house,
Have a couple of kids...
Is that all there is?
Please be about something.
'Cause a fool who doesn't stand for something
Will fall for anything,
Or so they say...
So who are you today?
Are you the leader, consoling the masses at her feet?
Or are you that video ho-fessional,
Distributing her goodies in the street?
Are you the next militant Malcolm or Huey,
Thinking outside the box?
Or are you out on corners, slangin' them rocks?
Hollerin' at shawty 'cause her body is hot...
S T O P
Realize that your lifeline is the only time you've got
To disprove the misconceptions that keep our people L O C K E D
...right here, in this spot,
Unable to overcome,
Living life from one to another roach-infested slum...
Our kids aren't dumb...
They simply have no choices...
Talented spirits with no voices...
Capable soldiers with no one to lead the way.
So I ask again, WHO ARE YOU TODAY?
