Given the Choice

Given the Choice

A Poem by Lowesy

The beginning is just; the beginning is right,

the constant wailing and constant fight.

To discuss the discourse of freedom’s first light

will take us forever into the damning night.

Fidelity must be spoken to those

who need the warmth of truth’s thick clothes,

who feel the need for life’s great oath

and to be taken gravely as a matter as so.

Success is what must be measured at once,

weight and health is of sudden importance.

Rivalry instantly ignited through instance,

a battle of babes of great significance.

Throughout the primary walks of life,

when babe has now grown into child,

when child is absorbing the essential guide

there is nowhere for this child to hide.

Blackened souls will seek to compete,

though we are all blackened souls underneath.

We all seek gratitude and plaudits from those with whom we speak.

Adolescence, I’m sure, will destroy the likes of me.

Toiling away for the great machine.

Like cogs destined to be the engine,

toiling away for humanity.

Which cog is shinier than the crooked colleague?

Retirement seems to be a venture from the fog,

where you’re made to live on scraps like dogs,

freeze at home and choke on smog.

a peek into our epilogue.

Let’s call upon our great creator

and ask ourselves, 'which one is greater?'

Space is supposedly a mask for our maker

but our lives are somehow difficult to savour.

Forever we will wander,

what lies beyond the years of yonder?

Given the choice, would you be forever younger?

Given the choice, would you still have the hunger?

I feel like I went on a journey and saw all those pictures. It does raise the question, if at the after life would the person still have the spirit to keep going on, or is it ready to go to sleep forever.

The first and third stanza are far more fluid than the second, it is however, a very good poem in its entirety.

Favorite line: "Blackened souls will seek to compete, / though we are all blackened souls underneath." I think this poem gets better as it moves. It goes from the state of youth and growing to the condition of the human race in a way that is both compelling and thought-provoking.

What is truly the question of life, if you could have one guaranteed answer what would it be?
That's what this poem says to me, it defines humans weakness, it points out the flaws in society, it justifies the innocence of a child, but repents for their corruption.
I love this poem and this wisdom used to write it.
Wise and creative write!

Great question are raised in the poem. I like becoming older and wiser. Sometime I wish i could go back in time. Take back some of the dumb things I done and did. Always a pleasure to read your thoughts. A outstanding poem.

I really like this one. It actually makes me think about life, whereas many other writings don't. Great job on the rhyming as well.

Very nice poem(or song if that's what you've written it as)! I love the rhyming and tune...
But I must admit, I didn't get the first line the first time I read it. I interpreted 'just' in its other meaning and that confused me. I got it when I read the second part though.
Keep writing!
