Cornbread and Gumbo

I’m heading down south…tag a long if you like.

A fine silver mist hovers over the Mississippi river. Early morning

Sunlight trickles down onto the red dust of Georgia.

The aroma of burnt whisky and the sound of guitar strings being plucked by an 86-year-old man. The Blues is played through the streets and bars while cornbread and bowls of gumbo are swallowed as the music glides over the delta.

A ginger cat relaxes in the shade of an old civil war veranda. The alcohol infused ghosts of William Faulkner and Truman Capote stumble around the hills of Tennessee while a hobo

Pours his soul into his old

Harmonica.

Steaming plates of grits, collard greens and warm biscuits are devoured,

As southern belle dances in a cornfield, her long white dress flows

in the sweet southern air.

I’m heading to Alabama, Lynchburg and Baton Rouge.

I’m heading down south…tag a long if you like.

I really loved the great descriptions you put into this poem. I feel the laid back vibe and the good old fashioned southern style in this poem. Loved the way you depicted the south. My family comes from there, so this really made me happy. This made me smile a lot. Great stuff here. Keep at it. :)

I'm from the south, and this captures it nicely. Very well written.

Great poem! Your descriptions were wonderful, and as I am a lover of these foods myself, it really made me hungry! The visions that sprang to mind as I read this were wonderful, and it actually made me want to 'tag along' as you say in the end. Really loved it, thanks for sharing.

You make me homesick for the deep south! Be sure to stop off in Memphis for Beale Street, Sun Studios, and Graceland. Happy travels.

Tiny typo... an 86-year-old MAN, not men.

Great description of the old south. I've lived here in Podunktown, Ga pretty much my whole life. Things are similar to that- biscuits, grits, sweet tea and collards, banjo pickin', smellin' whiskey. You 'bout pegged it right. :) I enjoyed your writing very much. If only us belles could still wear long flowing dresses and dance in the fields! Oh how lovely that would be.....

That's it. I'm headin' south!!! Oh gosh! You described the ideal, picturesque old South, complete with gumbo and harmonicas. Seriously, this was a fun, quirky poem that I not only enjoyed, but shared with my husband who has a passion for this kind of thing. We both adored it. Awesome description, great word placement, and a great way to bring it together "...tag a long if you like." I just might!

This southern gentleman thoroughly enjoyed the journey. Ever been to Savannah? Smells like burnt rubber, but rich in southern culture.
