solo adventure

solo adventure

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by carol schiff "in a world of her own"

in the dreary domain
of a rainy sunday
i trample a path traveled ten times
     and then ten times
          or perhaps more
as my creaky cranky joints complain
               suddenly
                    just to escape it all
my mind swims off in a puddle
to some destination secret to even me
nowhere near the realm of reality
and here i sit
stagnant in sunday’s existence
impatiently waiting
for my mind to impart tales
of its solo adventure

I love the idea of "a rainy Sunday" and the imaginative trampling of paths back and forth to create adventures. I like the image of your mind wandering away as you sit and patiently wait for it to come back with stories to tell. As if it can be the only one to reach those secret destinations. Our imaginations often go to places that we couldn't possibly reach, like dreams that can't be understood in the waking world. I really love the images you create with your well-chosen words!

I love this! I have no idea how many times I've sat down to do something and blinked an hour later, the thing still undone. And yet, I wouldn't call that time wasted, at least not all the time. Many great ideas and lyrics come when I'm "zoning out."

Sundays are a tad like this..I wonder why !! We seem to spend the day planning what to do and never get it done.

Now here is a strange thought that came to me as I read your words Lydi: "give me the beat, boys to free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away" and you Lydi, pen what a "stagnant Sunday" allows as a mind "drifts away"- poetic "adventures"... it seems Lydi, that even on rainy days, you can do nothing less than create beauty... cool. And very "nice" ~~redzone

Your words capture a rainy Sunday very well. Especially about the creaky joints & the mood it creates. I like the art work.

Ahh...nothing beats the wanderings and adventures of the human mind. It is a wonderland in itself. yes, it may be "nowhere near the realm of reality"...but everything makes perfect sense there. What a great poem Lydi...your poetry is my escape. :)

A wasted day penned in by rain so to speak. Sometimes we just want to do stuff and doing nothing feels restrictive. this expressive poem captures a mood.

Thanks for stopping by, Poppy. Lydi**
I love the way this poem unfolds to reveal that the thoughtful machinations of the mind are sometimes a mystery to us, as if they were some kind of disconnected extension of us and we are simply a vessel that carries it. I also love the images of a rainy Sunday in which your mind tramples a path when you, in fact, are sitting stagnant waiting for the mind to reveal its secrets. Great poetry, as usual!
