perpetuity

perpetuity

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by elaine de kooning "self portrait"

with the stealth of a jungle tiger
an enigma slides into her desk chair
thinking how cleverly the witness stand of life
has been disguised

grooves on her face
such interesting gullies
where the secret pathways to her soul
lie safely bastioned

yet within the perimeter
of an invisible fence erected years ago
children still roll down hills
butterflies never die
and bad guys are only capable of making
clearly anticipated moves.

she laughs
a pungent and acrimonious utterance
as her fingers dance with relentless passion
hoping to reveal every detail to perpetuity

"... butterflies never die and bad guys are only capable of making clearly anticipated moves ...". I love that part so much. I try, as often as I can, to commit the good things to paper / perpetuity, because I see that in life I spend way too much time complaining about the bad things. Anyhow ... I love the "safe place" this took me to. ~Jim

Hi Lydia. We can never hide from ourselves; nor should we have need.

A wonderfully insightful poem; and the penultimate stanza,
particularly the lines,
'children still roll down hills
butterflies never die,' is quite exquisitely executed. Beccy.

Thank you very much, Beccy. I appreciate your review. Lydi*
"fingers dance with relentless passion"
from the pen to the keyboard,
we work to get every thought from our mind and heart
into our poetry.
often the words escape us before we get them recorded,
often we capture every detail of perpetuity.

incredible poetry here.

I think of the ultimate witnesses. Ann Sexton. Emily Burns. Sharon Olds; those who can take the puzzle
of witness and render it un-perplexedly. And just as Jacob has said, we are the court that takes
the detail of perpetuity and in the absence of the intrinsic factors such as truth, regiment or
archive, nervously make it real.

Every poem remembers Lydia. Every poem should.

Somehow we survive when we slide
down hills... having faith that the
landing will be smooth. A Will assigns
to heirs forever... A poem that has
proven to be penned with tremendous
insight. truly, Pat

You gave life and meaning to the artwork. I like the woman and her thoughts. Woman can be dangerous. They rarely release their true self and face to many. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
