vibrant

vibrant

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

i’ve painted it all for you in vivid colors
no pastels or muted tones here
listen for the gentle echo of fingertips on keys
subtleties are not in attendance here
nor are they welcome
coffee house napkins become origami in just the “write”light
can you feel them doing a salsa grind?
crimson stained paper cups
elicit all sorts of connotations
this ain't no java jive
take a sip
don’t be shy
tell me what you see
this is the art of my life
and it's yours to share
so please take my hand now
let me take you sailing
through my vibrant sky

Jim said it, "jump right off the page" grabing you by the hands and shows you how to "sail/ through my vibrant sky"... no pastels, prime colors, primeval "connotations" and and and my "nice" sigh... Lydi I want some of what you are drinking, just a small sip from that "crimson stained paper cup"... some zooming expresso "write" to your poem... that's a double "nice"... thanks Lydi..

Coming from you, a poet whose work I admire, that means so much. Thank you, Poppy. Lydi**
Starkness of senses beautifully portrayed.
Reality as recorded by an artist high-on-life.
One profoundly loving invitation, Lydi!

WOW! Do I love your writing! This is a perfect example of what I've been telling "the kids" (on this website) constantly: USE VIVID IMAGERY! SHOW DON'T TELL! These lame declarations of mine do not help a young writer as much as reading something like this. This is how it's done. I love the sensation of total abandonment with which you describe everything around you. I love the way some of your descriptions leave room for the reader's imagination ("crimson-stained cups"). I also love the way you inject your own playful personality ("this ain't no java jive"). I could go on & on, but the sunshine is beckoning me outdoors.

Lydia Hi. I like browsing on WC, and this is where I've landed! I found this a real joy. Other comments have also touched upon a painting analogy, and I go with that as it's the whole that makes me smile. There are some fabulous phrases 'let me take you sailing through my vibrant sky' 'this ain't no java jive' for example, but for me it's the whole that makes it so enjoyable to read. And I totally agree about people-watching in coffee shops.

I was a little unsure about 'listen for the gentle echo ...' as this seemed at first to be actually quite subtle and muted, and thus at odds with what was said above and below. My take now is that you pointing out the range of activities and sounds is a little like someone like Van Gogh using some deft highlights almost to emphasise the vibrancy of the whole. Forgive me for asking, but should 'yours to share' be preceded by either 'it's' or 'is' rather than 'it', which looks to me like a typo.

Thanks for sharing - a very enjoyable read!

Regards
Nigel

I've told you this before Lydia and I don't want to sound like a person who sits around repeating things
over and over. But when I don't feel my best, and when my thoughts aren't the best, and I've looked hard in the mirror and don't look my best, I find a poem of
yours and all is made better...

The salsa grind is chili pepper, burn the house down kind of mixing! Love it, no shyness here, just plain unadulterated passion! (those two cups of coffee must be steaming right out of the cup...LOL)
