Homophobia is the form bullying that is generally aimed towards those who are not straight, i.e. gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender.

Homophobia is illegal in the United Kingdom and is classed as a hate crime, hate crimes can take many forms, such as:

  • physical attack
  • verbal abuse
  • domestic abuse
  • harassment
  • damage to your property
  • bullying
  • graffiti

What the law says

The police will treat hate crime as a priority. The courts can also impose a more severe sentence than for a similar crime with no hate motive.

You can report hate crime in the UK Here

Dealing with Homophobia

It can be hard to deal with on your own but at first if it's not all that bad try and ignore it. If it escalates then talk to a friend about it, if it is at work talk to your manager about it. If you are in college or university then you should talk to your lecturer as they have a legal responsibility for you.

It can wear away at you so stay strong and positive!
