Jasmine was exceptionally smart. Not the brilliant type on the si-fi channel who literally live another planet and are completely incapable of having a casual conversation; the type who just knew things. She knew things that she didn't even know how she knew them. To her, intelligence was fun, it was helpful. To her parents, it was necessary.
