Chapter 2

On the run

I could hear shouting behind us.

“Check the Sides of the house! Those going in make your way straight to the back door and check the yard leave one of you to watch the door in case they are still inside! Check all exits from the back yard!”

“Damn, damn, damn.”

“Shut it and run” Annabel said to me. I opened my mouth but Annabel spoke again. “If you say damn again you’re going to say ‘damn that girl Annabel really can punch’ while you’re lying on the ground with them” she nudged back at the house with her head “crowding around you and pointing their guns at you” I shut mouth like I was told and kept on running. We ran for what felt like hours sprinting when we could.

“I guess this makes it a sixth time you’ve met them now?” I asked Annabel after a long time of silence. She didn’t answer just glanced at me as I came up beside her. Then a thought occurred to me “Why were you being dragged into the police station?” Annabel sighed and slowed to a stop then turned to face me.

“They know what you are now Michael. They know what both of us are. They were after me because a fake accusation was made against me. It was one so serious so bad and it was faked so well I was and still am one of Australia’s most wanted, being with me you are also guilty but I knew you would end up dead if I had left you. Now knowing what you are what you can do and knowing that you are being hunted to be killed. You stand a better chance of surviving but we need to reach a safe house” we kept moving for a few hours though we stopped sprinting suddenly Annabel turned into a yard and went through a gate I wouldn’t have known was there if she hadn’t gone through it. I followed her closing the gate behind me. I walked around the corner of the house to see her holding the back door open

“First door on your left check the bottom draw of the plain wooden dresser. There should be a jar of notes grab it” I did as I was told and found a jar with full of Money. I walked out and around the house a bit before I found Annabel at the front of the house in the lounge room she had closed the curtains on all the windows and left the TV off. I held it up to show her I had found it and she smiled.

“Empty it here and we can count it” she said indicating a coffee table Annabel started sorting all hundred dollar notes into a pile so I started on the note closest to me which was a twenty. In the end we had $4675 all up but Annabel split it giving me 2335 grand while she took 2340 grand, she pocketed the extra five dollars. I got out my wallet but as I opened it Annabel snatched it from me then pulled out my driver’s license and began bending it “Hey!” I shouted trying to snatch it back. Annabel laughed gleefully holding it away then she jumped up and over to the other side of the coffee table suddenly I heard a loud snap and she handed it back to me.

“Thanks” I said bitterly “can I have my wallet now?” Annabel noticing how cold toward her I had gone held the wallet up but still out of reach before Speaking “I apologize I should have explained first. Everything in your wallet can be used to identify you now when we reach the safe house we can forge documents like a birth certificate with a different name and we can get you a new license and bank account but everything in this wallet must be destroyed even pictures of friends and your ties to those friends you must destroy” she held the wallet out to me but I barely noticed as I realized what kind of a life Annabel has led the one that I now would be forced to lead. I took my wallet and pulled out everything while Annabel disappeared, going into another room. She came back a few minutes later with some scissors which she handed to me

“Here cut them up and stay silent The government cars will start rolling past us in a couple of minutes then we will wait a bit longer and leave.” I nodded picked up my back card and then cut in half.

The sun was setting by the time we left the house and an hour after dark Annabel had told me that the Money we had was not hers and that the money did not belong to anyone she knew. “the only reason I knew they had the money is because there is One angle in their back yard which allowed me to see inside the house to that room and I watched someone put it there” If I hadn’t seen the expression on her face I would have thought she was pulling my leg so instead of laughing I asked her a question

“Did you enter the yard unseen and get out unseen too?” she laughed

“Almost one of them saw me and demand I empty my pockets before exiting through the gate rather than climbing the fence” we both laughed and then I yawned.  Annabel glanced at me we will be at the safe house soon you can sleep there. It’s just a few more minutes Away” I nodded and ten minutes later Annabel said we were there. Another five minutes later I was asleep on a soft comfy bed.

***

My eyes blasted open and I sat bolt upright as a loud yell woke me a moment later I was running out the door of the room I had been sleeping in heading toward were I had heard the yell. I burst into an unfamiliar kitchen to see an old microwave lying upside down on its side on the floor and Annabel sitting on a chair at a table massaging the toes of her left foot. She looked at me apologetically

“sorry… dropped the microwave on my foot trying to move it so I could plug it in” she said pointing to a power point in the wall. I picked it up and carried it to where Annabel had pointed and after plugging it in I too sat at the table. We both sat quietly for a few minutes and then as Annabel started moving around the kitchen I became aware of the pounding headache I had. After a few more minutes had passed Annabel spoke again.

“We should stay here a few days before moving on. A week at least, two at most that way we will be moving behind them and we can reach the others before the God Trackers Turn around”

“Others?” I asked.

“Life Trackers. We all sort of live together with a friend of mine who isn’t a Life Tracker. That’s how we hide. They answer the door and we keep out of site until whoever was at the door is either gone or revealed as a friend. Once there we can also hook you up… which” she held up a hand to forestall my open mouth from asking what that was “means we hook you up to a computer we have developed which alters the part of your brain which gives you the visions so you can see us in your visions for some reason after this you will have small telekinesis ability you will be able to read the minds of anyone in the same room as you but only for a limited time. This will also for some reason make everyone you encounter within the short time you have telekinesis, the ability to see you in their visions without having to be hooked up again.”

“ Ok cool so we will be able to work in a coordinated fashion?”

“Its also a safe guard in case one of us is caught and starts working for the gods Trackers but yes we can coordinate things better while we run”

“ok what about fighting them”

“You can’t!” Annabel spun on me suddenly with a fire in her eyes "haven't you listened to anything I’ve said? I’m the only person to have survived six encounters with them I am the only one to have survived more than one encounter currently alive You don’t fight them.”

“Why Not if we go to them…”

“JUST DON’T!” Annabel was breathing hard then her face softened “There’s a box of aspirin by the front door for your headache be careful not to be seen by anyone through the windows”

“how do you know about my headache? I asked

“Its an after affect of your first few Visions over time you wont get headaches and be able to call on a vision at will but we will work on that when we reach the other Life trackers now go get an Aspirin” she handed me a glass of water and I headed to the door moving quickly past all the windows despite the Curtin’s being thick and drawn closed. The whole time my mind was also trying to figure out why Annabel had suddenly gotten so angry and changed the subject so quickly. I found The box Next to a bag I guessed was Annabel’s I popped out two the normal dose for anyone aged from thirteen up and walked back into the kitchen to find a bowl of canned spaghetti with toast and a glass of water sitting across the table from Annabel who had the same thing in front of her and was eating like she hadn’t eaten in a couple of days. She smiled sheepishly at me as I continued to stare a little stunned. She didn’t strike me as the kind of person to eat like that no matter how hungry they were. “Sorry I haven’t eaten properly in a while”

“when was the last time you ate?”

Just before I met you. But it was only a mouthful” she said as I sat “I was grabbed from behind by the back of my collar and pulled back roughly I was surprised and dropped the sandwich I had just started eating” I nodded.

“So what now?” I asked we just wait a week then move on?” Annabel nodded confirming it.

“We just wait”
