I Believe

I Believe

A Poem by Michelle Lauren
"

For Deborah C.

"
I believe in Moms
              in Dads

I believe in parental wisdom
              in parental imperfections

I believe in love for siblings and family
              in childhood and in innocence

I believe in people loving their country
              in countries loving their people

I believe in the right to life
              in the right to die

I believe in equality at birth
              in equality at death

I believe in freedom to think freely
              in freedom to express openly

I believe in yesterday
              in today and in tomorrow

I believe in fulfillments and disappointments
              in chosen paths taken

I believe in realizations for I realize my beliefs have been wrong!

So powerful how you know what your beliefs are and how you stand by them. Beautifully crafted poem entangled in faith and beliefs. Alan Watts said once " he believer will open his mind to the truth on the condition that it fits in with his preconceived ideas and wishes. Faith, on the other hand, is an unreserved opening of the mind to the truth, whatever it may turn out to be. Faith has no preconceptions; it is a plunge into the unknown." I believe Belief clings, but faith lets go. In this sense of the word, faith is the essential virtue of science, and likewise of any religion that is not self-deception. Keep writing sincerely your friend in writing and life

Lots of writers do "list" type collections of thoughts or feelings & I usually start snoozing after the fourth or fifth one. This is one of the best I've seen this "listing" way of expressing oneself done. I love that you hit on some doozies, as far as expressing ideals that are sorely longed for these days. I love that you create an interesting trajectory that starts out local, then widens, until it's about universal ideas. Rather than a list of beliefs, in between the lines, this reads like a list of longing. I love that each thing longed for is simply-worded & not over-complicated, which makes the whole that much more powerful (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I guess what we believe in is a product of our upbringing and life experiences and the power of our own minds. We formulate our own beliefs and live by them and only in time do we see the positive or negative impacts of those beliefs. They can always change and usually do. Its always good to introspect and evolve as we go on our life journey. We make mistakes but come out much stronger individuals for learning from them. 💛

not a problem
Every faith has its tenets. But every person hasn't always a Faith nor follows the tenets they professed even a day before. We say black, we say white, we profess to shades of gray but not always the exact shade of an hour before. We sway in the unevenness of our societal times - times where yesterdays' rights are deemed todays' wrongs because TODAY is the day we judge by and not the yesterday the then society lived by. Right is right 'til you live within a left society. Left becomes right 'til tomorrow comes. And we? We muddle through as only we can.
