A Married Woman

A Married Woman

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

A Married Woman

I am a married woman.

Statistically speaking,

I should have all of which I need

and want

in my husband.

I lead an ordinary life.

I come and go virtually as I please,

indulging myself with time alone

whenever I can sort it out

from yesterday’s laundry

and the local PTA.

Call it simple etiquette,

that a woman like me

would never want for something more…

that a woman like me

would never settle for anything less

than what encircles the third finger

of her left hand

Statistically speaking,

I should have all of which I need.

Wow.... talk about powerful.
She may have felt she was or was not getting all she needed
But what did she WANT?
having everything except love in a relationship
Only leaves you longing.

Excellent poem.

Thank you, Gee...
I thought it was you. It's very poignant. In all of your poetry that I have read, this has touched me the most, because it felt like you were speaking from the heart, with grief, passion, sorrow; call it whatever you want, but I certainly felt it. I hope you never go through such things.

If you felt this, then I have done my best. As a poet, we can only wish to reach those with what we.. read more
I love the ebb rig and rowed flow to this, a truth inspired by a heart coming out the shadows that is alive and bleed..it's that desire that drowns those whom don't know themselves held by someone else..and what way to end such a introspective..."statically".. excellent piece

They are, most certainly...thank you!
Unfortunately, all too many married women...and married men....do not have just what they need in the confines of marriage. Beautifully written, Kelly. Lydi**

This was AWESOME Kelly. A true testament to a woman who SHOULD be happy, but isn't. You nailed this!

Lmao! Your tooo funny, and your so welcome!
Oh yes, the unsettled discontent and guilt of wanting more. Particularly when things really aren't that bad in the marriage, but they're not satisfying, we have a lot of guilt for wanting more. I can relate.

Thanks so much, Terry!
its very sad for your friend, i hope it turns out good for her, your poem reflects a way of thinking that i remember from when i was young, when women were content (or so it was meant to seem) that they should be the 'good wife', i hope we've moved on from there, as the song goes 'coming out of the kitchen' very well written Kelly :)
