Little Poppy

Little Poppy

A Poem by NJ Schneider
"

I found a new friend.

"
Spring night
Chilly as the wind blows
Warm light floods the parking lot
From the diner where I just left friends
Still laughing lightly to myself
In thought of past things spoken

Start the car
A slight shiver runs through me
As the engine roars to life
I turn on the lights
Let off the brake
And make my way home

Light turns red
And I hit the brakes
A small patch of darkness
Creeps out of the night
Walking awkwardly
Back leg dragging

Turn off the car
And get out to help
She's dirty and cold
I take caution
Before picking her up
She's shivering wildly

Return to the car
I place her in my lap
And coo to calm her
She stays still
As quiet as the night
And we head home

My little Poppy. I'm glad that light turned red or I may have hit her. Poppy is a little black chihuahua. She's an old girl and her back legs don't work very well from an old injury. She's blind in her right eye and yet found her way into my heart in a matter of seconds. I just hope I get to keep her.

That is really sweet that you saved her. I think after that you deserve to keep her.
Did you see the story of the dog that crawled home on two broken front legs after being swept away by the tornado? Such a heartwarming story.

Nice poem about a special life-saving moment for the injured animal...very sweet all the way through to the happy ending.

Nice...

I hope so too. Sounds like she needs a new home and a new friend in this last leg of her life.
