Homeward Bound

Homeward Bound

A Poem by Neville
"

As true as true can be............

"
Homeward Bound

Oh' my word
How he did have us laugh
That evening
With tales of all his young
Yesteryear's

Of once driving that
Old Russian tank
Through streets and fields
From Varna through to Velingrad

That was when his eldest son
Was still a lad and strapped
To what is now an obsolete
Machine gun mount

With Vassa busy baking bread
Beneath that Russian tanks
Gray and rusting bonnet
That is how they once lived
He said

From hand to mouth
No questions asked
Unlike today when absolutely
Nothing is appreciated
And everything instead comes easy

So true when you say nothing is appreciated... Today's lifestyle people just care about one thing and that is what can they get.... No more caring in life and no more doing from the goodness of your heart... Thanks for sharing Neville..

I guess every generation believes life was more . . . SOMETHING . . . than current times seem to be now. You’ve taken such ordinary sentiments & woven it into an extraordinary example from real life to illustrate this universal impression that follows humankind from generation to generation. It’s true that many people complain about “being without” when they have so much more than many of us ever did! You’ve offered a lighthearted lesson without being preachy. Hope you're feeling better & better again! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

that is so true, that it seems we get everything so easy that we can't appreciate life as it is... we know only about life in a superficial way because we thought we just exist to live.. i am getting philosophical here again my friend

What fascinating history put to fine free verse. Today's life of pick and choose is in itself taken for granted. My elderly darlings down the road tell me that years past, folk near proudly spoke of make do and mend!. Times of war and its aftermath were/are held precariously because life disallows choice, one takes what's there, no complaints just a whispered prayer perhaps. As you imply, we learn more about survival by having less...

Could have added more, but new motto: say less and survive the bullet!
I like the description in the poem. How it makes you feel the rawness and simplicity while understanding that hardscrabble times pass and are yet bittersweet

Hand to mouth, was the norm and it never hurt anyone ...it just made my generation appreciate what they had and that was a good thing too.
Waste not want not , but these days things not wanted are just discarded instead of recycled..

Making the most of the very little you have and enjoying life to the full. These days everything is so materialistic. We live in a throw away society. Everything chucked out before it has worn out. My grandparents would be turning in their graves. My Nan could make a meal out of nothing and turn one of her old frocks into a little skirt for me:))
