At Seventeen or Thereabouts

 

The second time, or thereabouts

we met ..

I was mightily impressed with

the way

that she looked, the way that she

moved

 

  and by her amazing dexterity ..

Since she

could very easily roll a decent five

skin joint,

with just one hand, on the outside

dust jacket

  

of my Dark side of the Moon LP ..

And all while

strumming and humming in tune

to Janis Ian’s

little masterpiece, At Seventeen ..

You are showing your love of music in this poem. The Dark Side of the Moon, I still have on vinyl. Now that is an album still played frequently.

17 an impressionable age. Your focus on looks and how a joint was rolled. I see her as a hippie chick.

A poem of reflection back to a time that for some can be awkward to say the least. Janis Ian’s song is all about feeling alienated, not fitting in. That’s what I think it’s about.

At 17 I was at college studying fashion, textiles and retail and getting tipsy at lunch times in the pub. Well at least I got one of them right.

This poem makes the reader reflect on themselves at the same age. That’s an interesting thing to do. Looking at your younger self from a grownup’s perspective.
