On Contemplating the Sound of A Lone Tree Falling

A Poem by Neville

On Contemplating the Sound of A Lone Tree Falling

there is something almost zen like, about a foot being stamped quietly

don’t you think,

it reminds me so much, of a tree, falling in a forest, with no one

to hear it

or whether it cries, whispers or roars, on that last fateful journey ..

still, there are those, who assume it would surely, release one last

gasp, or a sigh

and although I can dream, in truth, such sounds would be for you

and heard, by your ears only ..

You can tell a lot from the sound of a footstep if you learn to listen and hear, coming or going, quickly or slowly, and is that all you can hear or all there is to hear or...is it even what we think? I heard a tree fall once, I think it cried, "Ouch!!" (Or maybe that was the ground beneath it.) You got me, I am stumped.

Like the way you turned this unanswerable philosophical question into romance at the end. I always preferred George Carlin's take on it: If a man is standing alone in the middle of a forest, with no woman around for miles, is he still wrong?

I am thinking about a foot being stamped quietly. I am trying hard, but the foot is not happy, it cries out in pain.

Similar when a tree falls or is felled. That is why I could not watch the felling of our tree. To me is would be like witnessing an execution. If the tree fell of its own volition after a long and happy life, I would have heard that sigh. I know it.

What a thoughtful poem Neville. It reminds me of the importance of the natural world and how we should remain close to it. Happy Wednesday my friend.

Trees are like people. Well they are to me.
