I have read that iambic pentameter reflected the basic British breath pattern of the time. If pentameter can't find you, I wonder if octameter would have the patience to do the job.

Now sonnets are hard work in my opinion dear J. Not for the feint hearted. You are looking for perfection in form. Yes that rhythm and meter has got to be right. They may be beautiful and full of heart, but they can be unforgiving. Just like relationships my friend. I am the first to arrive.

I've written a few sonnets in my time, and always the Spenserian sonnet. It works perfectly for me. Albeit, I have to count the syllables on my fingers. Aha.
