Meekly Speak of Love's Own Power - A Poem

Meekly Speak of Love's Own Power - A Poem

A Chapter by N. C. Matthews
"

I wrote this when I was about 14. I had read "Romeo & Juliet" in my English comp class & wondered if I could write a similar tale in rhyme.

"

And kneeling by his father's side,

A bust of tears and sobs, replied,

'Why did they take my love away?

She has been gone for many a day.

I loved her, it is true.

I loved her more than she ever knew.

I can never forget her sight,

in her eyes that burning light.

The light that shone in her eyes,

the one that took no other's lies.

I was worthy, you said so.

But still her father told me no.

Why, Father, tell me why.

Please tell me or I shall die!'

But grieve as John may, Ellie did not come.

And he did not know what Ellie had perceived,

nor how much she had grieved.

It is true, she ran away.

Promising never to return another day.

For great was her sadness when she learned,

though much she had yearned,

that John, Ellie would not marry.

'Why live in anger and grief?' John wondered.

And he made his choice as his heart thundered.

'Death,' he thought, 'sweet death.'

Its curse was now his freedom.

Up he went onto the cliffs and mountains.

The waters below swayed like crystal fountains.

John leaned over far as everything went silent.

And what should happen but for him to lose his balance?

The earth tilted and swirled about his head.

And with a great impact John lay near dead.

What a shock it was to Ellie who had returned.

She had called after him, saw him fall,

and her heart had churned.

Now she stood looking down,

And all was lost as away went the ground.

Clutching for the surface, Ellie pulled herself onto the shore.

But poor John was alive no more.

With a tear streaked face she held him to her body,

no life left, not even a trace.

From above a boulder fell, crushing them both

while still in their desperate embrace.

And who are we to meekly speak of love's own power?
