HIDING MY OWN EGGS

HIDING MY OWN EGGS

A Poem by Miss Sharon
"

There MAY be a few advantages that come with age....

"

The lost landscape of my childhood only exists now
in memories that are somewhat clouded.
It was so long ago, it seems as if they happened
to someone else that I can't remember all that well either.
I feel like a lumpy ridge cobbled with loose scree

when I make my spent way down a rock-strewn trail
and when the beautifully perfect face on my favorite
magazine cover flaunts itself unashamedly in my direction,
all I can see are my own bony, arthritic hands smudged
with the days gardening as I quickly turn the page.

But the turned pages are none the better...with those
pencil thin runway models looking like savagely neglected
flowers that might blow away with one disappointing flaw.

I know I will never wear a string bikini again (as if I ever did!)
but yet I'm happy.....these are my golden (?) years.

It really is not ALL that bad to be getting older.
I don't need to laugh at jokes I don't consider to be funny
or spend half the night trying to figure out what to wear
to try and look thinner and sexier....and the best thing about
having such a short memory is that everything in my closet
seems new and best of all....I can hide my own Easter eggs!
;>)

I can relate to your words in so many ways Sharon. Why is it that those memories we would love to hang on to seem to fade with time? I struggle at times to remember the face of someone who was so dear to me...and as years go on, he is getting a bit blurry..

Love the bit of humor at the end. It's wonderful to read your poetry again.

oh Miss Sharon, this is bitter sweet and funny with an undercurrent of melancholy.
you described getting on in age in an original way. though I'm of a different gender (see picture on the left) I can easily relate, as I'm certainly not getting any younger myself. well except for the string bikini.
loved it.

i really like this...today's media paints this unrealistic idea of perfect.
i believe the perfect human is the flawed human, and flaws are most beautiful...

Here, here Jacob! My point exactly. Thanks for the kind review. ~Sharon
Love the reality that you bring. And by a certain age the right to light or not like something is sometimes the only control in life that is left. Glad you are living life to it's fullest and enjoying the golden years, so many don't know how to be happy and enjoy. Thank you for sharing.

I don't think there is a person out there who cannot relate to this one.

As we age, it seems that the days drag, but the years fly by. Sometimes, when I look back on youth, it seems like a different person who lived in a different world, and to some extent that is true. Yet, at other times, it's hard to fathom that it was as long ago as it was, because it seems like yesterday. I often wonder where the years went, because I can't recall what transpired between then and now. A strange dichotomy.

But yet, your piece has an even more important message. Young women are so overwhelmed by superficiality and that "pencil-thin" model image of what society tells them is beautiful. It is not until those years are long gone that they come to accept their true inner beauty.

Great write!
