Tree Stumps

Tree Stumps

A Story by Kathryn Smith

You took me to your favorite place on earth

To see the tree they cut down ten years from your birth

Our fingers traced in circles around it's history

We brushed our hands right back in time through centuries

I love trees.

I also love tree stumps.

I've found many people overlook tree stumps.

They say the stumps are ugly.

Not worth anything, because the tree of treasures has been cut down..

but I think there's something they missed...

If you look at a tree stump, you'll find something you couldn't see before.

Rings of circles.

These rings of circles were what was inside the tree.

The soul of the tree.

It is the age.

The history.

They could carry a story.

I see it as the tree's greatest beauty.

It is like our hearts.

We can't see one another's hearts and our hearts are the greatest, most important things we have.

If trees had eyes imagine how much they'd witness!

How much of the world has changed over time.

The next time you see a tree stump, look at it with care.

It's not just a stump of nothingness.

It's a novel of stories.

I'll see you in the future when we're older

when we are full of stories to be told

cross my heart and hope to die

I'll see you with your laughter lines

I was thinking about friendship today.

About love.

Whenever I see an elderly couple together it gives me hope.

Hope that there is some kind of true genuine love out there.

Hope that there is someone who could possibly love me even when I can't walk  or speak anymore.

I have no idea who will end up loving me.

Sometimes I wonder if he even exists.

but then I remember something...

like the tree stumps, it'll be clear to see who loves me.

He'll look inside and see the rings of my soul.

He'll value the stories I hold.

The years I've grown.

The life I mold.

There is more to life than what we know.

Wow. This is gorgeous. I understand what the narrator is feeling when he or she talks about the history of trees

Wow! very beautiful. I really like the two different illustrations of the heart and the tree stump. I have often thought about writing a poem from a tree's perspective. A tree in a meadow that witnesses countless things such as wars and love etc..There is something about a tree that really has a lot of symbology. But I really like how you use a tree here as an illustration for the soul. You get into the inside and see the trunk and the rings that have weathered many storms and seen many sunshines and is spreading out in experience. Then you find what the soul has trully been through, what it has experience and you begin to understand that person better. You have to see the rings. i really ejoyed this piece, thanks for sharing

Dendrology is the study of tree circle.Like a vynil record grove each ring speaks of history of life

You listened to their music and heard the message Each chpping of a tree is the end of an unfinished poem

Beautiful! Especially "These rings of circles were what was inside the tree. The soul of the tree." and how you compare it with the our hearts. I agree, there is more to life than what we know. Really beautiful Kathryn!
