Lost Eyes

Lost Eyes

A Poem by Paul Bell

Somewhere down the line, her hair was blond

Now the black roots showed the aging woman I knew so well

She still had that dignified hatred etched into her face though

I could even see the longing for the question

A wanting to finally retaliate

She probably wouldn't be around in another ten years

Not with that pent up anger

Strange how time does that

To keep it all hidden inside for so long

I really should ask, say something to her

I would sue your hairdresser

Her eyes exploded

So strange, it was the eyes that drew me to her all those years ago

She walked away without turning round

Dignified to the end

I wonder if they’ll put that on her headstone

Hated to the end

The very end

Yet her eyes stayed true.

I have this personal belief
Eyes are the window of the soul
and the most beautiful of people were once hated and misunderstood
its the nature of humanity to refute anything outside the norm

I enjoy your style of writing
a great deal of honesty and openness

Yes the eyes are definitely the window. They tell all.

Not sure if this is a poem.......more like a short story.

The thing that i took from this piece is how people change over time, physically as they age, and psychologically as the experiences of their lives, either good or bad, make an impact on them. As you expressed rather well, the mind and physicality changed, yet the eyes stayed the same. The irony is that the eyes are responsible for seeing everything, every good or bad experience one encounters. Yet they never change.

This is a piece to ponder over. Unorthodox in style, but with a clever piece of thought behind it. Very interesting work.

Thanks Doodley. Yes the eyes always tell the story.
I loved this poem. Honestly, what really captured me is that this person is someone who is either loved or hated, and in return either hates or loves. I loved the abstraction of the person you wrote about. Awesome job!

Thanks Rehanna.
Very interesting. For me, I cannot help but insert my own personal experience, of looking at the man I once thought I loved, old, and broken, and bitter. Not that he is old, he only looks that way. Hatred and anger will do that to a person.

Shame when bitterness gets in the way of life.
