Once I Was a Gandy Dancer

Once I Was a Gandy Dancer

A Poem by Sharon Miller Bolander
"

I'm a dog that used to run the railroad tracks as a stray. I hope you enjoy my story!

"

Thought myself a dancer, gandy
Roamed the tracks and spotted Mandy
Purebred gal, her hair was sandy
She was fine and I was dandy
Couldn't pass such luscious candy
One-night stand...oh, my, how randy

On go lights...I jumped the fence
Didn't have a lot of sense
Tied to post for my offense
Waited there with great suspense
Lacking in self-confidence

Owners came to take me home
Gave me bath, shampoo, and comb
Heard some talk of chromosome
Called me mutt that loves to roam
Ride in car...a foster home?

Fancy sign...my tail did wag
Went inside...got pat and tag
Room to room, I walk zigzag
Saw white coat and thought, 'Red flag'
Owners talk about my shag

Soothing words, 'You'll feel brand-new'
Fell asleep the last I knew
Woke up to the brightest hue
In a cage without a clue
Ouch! I hurt. What did they do?

Here I come...my tail's a-draggin'
I've been had...my skin's a-saggin'
Had a bone but now I'm gaggin'
Was a stud...no longer braggin'
Pups are due; I won't be shaggin'
