Opaque Possibilities

Opaque Possibilities

A Poem by Sharon Miller Bolander
"

A prose poem written for Albert's Cafe Ten Word challenge using: BOX, REMAINS, PROJECT, OUTSIDE, FOREVER, MORE, VASE, ACT, ILLUSION, BREATHING

"

Opaque Possibilities

Is breathing simply an act
that keeps our warm remains
outside the wooden box,
or is it an illusion
separating the dying
from those already dead?

Are we part of a project called life
or merely a dried flower in a vase,
more for show than purpose,
forever void of feeling real
or thinking far beyond the mortal wall
that clouds the view of eternity?

Now, see? That is a free form poem. I go crazy when people write a treatise or essay or something and then break it up into stanzas so they can call it poetry! It isn't fooling anybody.

Your piece has the feel of being thought out line by line--did it help or hinder you to have to use specific words? Putting such constraints on what I write seems to help me. It makes me think harder and plan things out rather than letting it all come tumbling out. Because if this, the work ends up being stronger.

Bravo on this one.
