I Once Fell in Love

I Once Fell in Love

A Poem by Tori Jones

I once fell in love,
I was the olive branch
He was the dove...
I thought it was true
That he loved me for me
For I never knew
It wasn't to be
The two of us together
For eternity...

Wonderful imagery of the love-dove-olive branch triangle! You need to put more allusions like that into your poems. It brings it to life out of the abstract nature that free verse poetry has by grabbing some visual image for your readers. The solace and betrayal oozes out of the verses. Beauty in desolation! Nix the be verb too...unless it is necessary; it sucks the emotion out of any verse since it is the most impassive verb in English.
