A New Life

A New Life

A Poem by Simon Welsh
"

Yes, my childhood dreams did lie to me

"
I was seduced by the American Dream
This country doesn't feel like home anymore
I wish I was useful to someone
even if my responsibilities are considered minor

Hitch me a ride, I want to travel across the sea
Maybe there's a new life out there for me to live
God knows, it can't be worse than this
I'm sick of feeling like I'm being compared

Compared to those so, so different to me

Yes, my childhood dreams did lie to me
I thought everything would just fall in place
But this jigsaw piece refuses to fit
I guess I was not made for this grey landscape

Don't pigeonhole me, I don't like the implications
Is it my fault if there's no chance to move on?
One day I'll just leave and maybe one day
I'll wake up as a better person under a different sky

This write has conjured a lot of thoughts and makes me think twice about the idea of dreams as we all have our own perceptions of them. Very thought provoking write nice.

A challenging read that certainly made me think about hopes and aspirations. "my childhood dreams did lie to me" is a powerful statement and something I can relate to also. Your final line is superb :) I enjoyed this very much. Penny

The narrator is leaving a lot to uncertainty, maybe not the best thing to do in a wave of unpreparedness.
