Life and Death

Life and Death

A Poem by Sandra Caskey

What we do and what we are
Is something so sharp it can leave a scar.
However, we are constructed this way,
And you’re life isn’t freely given away.
You can either accept our secrets
With all our false or true reasons.
You can listen to us clearly
Or forget about us quickly.
Do whatever you please
But be willing to seize
The very things you refuse to lose.
Heed our warning: you can’t refuse
That nothing is permanent.
So, you have to focus on what is current.
Playing with the past is running with scissors,
Someone’s bound to get hurt, just look in these mirrors.
What we do and what we are
Is something so sharp it can leave a scar.
Let’s play a game with Life
And be cut by their knife.
Let’s play a game with Death
And let them take away your final breath.
