what every princess should know

The Princess Rules

A princess mustn’t ever say

“Yuck or Ick or Eww!”

When presented with food

That she would never chew

“Oh, no!” declared Miss Emily Sue

“I’m afraid that simply will not do.”

She must remember always

All have different tastes.

And never judge another’s,

Using utmost haste.

Instead, refrain from comment

Or politely look away

Sometimes, it is not what you do,

As it is, what you don’t, say

A princess mustn’t ever laugh or snort or snicker,

When stumbling, her brother falls upon his head.

For that would surely make him kick her

And turn his fair face, fire engine red.

“Oh, no!” declared Miss Emily Sue

“I’m afraid that simply will not do.”

We all have days we’re not so graceful

Days, when everything goes awry

We tangle up our words and feet

Despite how very hard we try

Instead, refrain from comment

Or politely look away

Sometimes, it is not what you do,

As it is, what you don’t, say

So just how should a princess act?

These rules will help complete the task.

She should always use her manners

Say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ and ‘God bless’

Be polite, considerate and kind.

And should always clean her mess.

A princess should always be refined,

When partaking at the table.

Have her napkin neatly ‘cross her lap

and keep her elbows off the table.

“Why, yes,” declared Miss Emily Sue

“These are the things a princess must do!”

“One crumpet only, small bites, please

Daintily dab wee crumbs from your lips

Gently pick up the china teacup

Pinkie extended, swallow small sips.”

Now that you know what’s expected

Now that you know every rule

Rest assured that you’re selected

To graduate from princess school.

This piece has a lot of potential (I feel) There are a lot of princess books out there, but putting a different spin on that theme....like how her brother would react if she wasn't so princess-like around him..I loved that part. Plus you gotta love a character (especially a princess) that has some faults (or cant resist being unprincess like around her brother) even when she's teaching others about being a princess. I bet you have a lot of unprincess-like stories too! I like the graduation at the end.
I really enjoy your writing and ideas! Thanks for sharing.

I love poems with messages in them. This is beautiful.
If i was given a chance to edit the dictionary, the word princess would mean "a girl with good manners".

Amazing, you hit a homerun with this one, it tells how girls are expected to be and why boys should value them, also for girls what to expect from their prince, as their parents invest so much raising their daughters well.

I think that I agree with the others in that this has the makings of a much longer and involved story, I have tried many times to make more of a single poem..sometimes with some success and others with complete failure...I think the 'hook' line of... Sometimes it is not what you do; as it is what you don't say; would scan better, and pack more punch simply by adding one syllable to the second line...DO NOT SAY...It gives it more flow..But then , as I said in the message I am no expert, All people see things differently

This is very cute, Sharon. It would make a lovely part in a children's book about little princesses.

Ha! I like this lesson in "Princess 101" - with Miss Emily Sue as instructor! :) This should be read to little princesses everywhere (especially the ones who laugh at their clumsy brothers...)
