Patchwork Heart

Patchwork Heart

A Poem by Richard M

My heart is made as patchwork

  with thoughts and feelings sewn,

of ones that I have loved and

  hearts I wish I’d known.

They’re stitched in different colours, of

  different moods and times, but

  still for all my searching,

that one to just call mine.

But woven into fabric is

  loss and sadness too,

sorrows too much to bear, with

silence, just something I must do!

Each piece has a meaning,

feelings that I hold,

their softness to sink into

in future years as I grow old.

Threadbare throughout my heart

are some strands worn soul deep,

‘colours’ most beautiful, but

years so long hurts too strong,

just too sad to speak.

Those strands most precious and

  tender to my ‘touch’, but

  each represent a memory,

a love so very much.

My heart is made as patchwork

  with different pieces sewn,

of love, feelings, emotions

  that time has just outgrown.

Each one’s a colour comforting

  that slowly fades in hue,

old and worn with time

  till it disappears from view.

But mine is a different stitch

  they just don’t understand,

they cannot know the love I have

  to sew in every strand.

I’ve never found a fabric

to match my very own, but

all those stitches are part of me, the

  story of my love sewn.

It shrouds me in its covers,

memories warming glow,

just a thought, a memory

that only I will ever know.

There are some pieces vibrant

  set in different weave,

family and friends, a love divine

  no one can conceive,

pieces of special meaning and

  sacred to my heart,

that never lose their colour,

of me, they’ll forever be a part.

I can so relate to every word in this astounding piece. To be accepting of our experiences and hold on to the good ones is a daring probability but alas, we are only human eh! Banish ill thoughts we must in order to enjoy the true benefits of life and living. Taken on bord are these words of experience and wisdom. Thank you

The way you express yourself in this poem, I could swear you've actually sewn a quilt. You perfectly capture the way it feels to pick out fabrics & colors & patterns, while these details spark memories of the clothing that was made from these leftover scraps. You say all this without really referring to the way it might feel to actually do such sewing/quilting. But it's the way you patch together feelings that conveys this sensation of selecting fabrics to represent memories (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Patchwork of heart is needed often in a life. I enjoyed your words and thoughts Richard. Life is a wild ride. We will learn pain and sweetness. Sometime in the same second. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.
