Culture on A Cigarette Packet

Culture on A Cigarette Packet

A Poem by Tomás Ó Cárthaigh
"

hOW i DISCOVERED THE WRITINGS OF rOBBIE bURNS

"

====================================
Culture from a Cigarette Packet
====================================

Words I read of Aftons waters
Green braes and other lines of Burns the bard,
On a packet of cigarettes
What funny places culture throws her card!

And from there more of Burns I read,
The more of his writings to read I desired,
For I am a poet, though not as good as he
I was and am by him inspired.

Culture from a cigarette packet...
Crazy the idea some wil call,
But I say its better be crazy
Than to get no culture at all!

That's pretty cool how you discovered Burns! It's not strange; just a unique way of finding him.

I liked the lines:

"Words I read of Aftons waters
Green braes and other lines of Burns the bard,
On a packet of cigarettes
What funny places culture throws her card!"

Very cool!

Excellent! I have only just started to discover your work, and while your gift for words is evident in everything I have read so far, this piece is my favorite--- especially the 'perfect connection' it made, the positive impression on an innocent mind, as you mentioned. Definitely a delight-- thank you for sharing it!

I remember a time in my youth when cigerette ads on TV where as numerous as cereal commercials!

Very true my friend. If you are not hurting anyone, then a little insanity is not a problem. But to follow in the footsteps of someone you admire is not insanity (unless he is a mass-murderer). Nicely written. You always put together a professional read. I enjoyed this one - as I have enjoyed the other pieces that you have posted.

Interesting to write about, you have an eye for details. This was a well written short poem, it flows nicely. I have a little suggestion though, "For I am a poet, though not as good as he," I would add a comma, because the next line now directly continues with "I" -- Made me stop and read the line over again.
