Grandpa

Grandpa

A Poem by James Mckay

Oh how I miss those years
When I use to sit on your knees
Watching television with you
Throughout the eighties and nineties

We loved watching wrestling
And every single football game
You'd whistle at the cheerleaders
And Grandma called you by name

We both just started laughing
Those were just good ol times
I remember how you smelled
And how you always collected dimes

You also love watching westerns
From Clint Eastwood to John Wayne
But most importantly we were cheering
On Sunday during those Cowboy games

Sometimes I would ask you questions
All about how you did your part
When you were a soldier in WWII
And how you received a Purple Heart
Sundays during the worship service
You sat on the end of the nearly last pew
There were moments growing up
When I wanted to be like you

I remember how you would get up early
To go walk inside of McCreless Park Mall
Or you would walk a few laps around it
Or I would fall asleep early and stay in the car

You were a sweet, gentle big man
With the most kindest heart I ever saw
Wish you were here; Oh how I miss you
See you soon; I love you, Grandpa!
