Numbing Pain

Numbing Pain

A Poem by Curtis.Lenker

we are all addicted to something
something that takes the pain away
whether it be drugs or cars
or it be music or television
anything can be an addiction
but it never works does it
it only numbs the pain for a minute
sometimes we just get in our
cars no matter how much gas
and drive to absolutely nowhere
just because we do not want to be alone
alone with our thoughts and emotions
they flood us like nothing else
that even exists on this earth
we battle and are exhausted from it
people see us and say its all ok
but deep down we know it not
so we turn to the our vice
just to feel numb and disappear
but it never works for long
because no matter what
our numbing pain always comes back

Thank you for this poem - perfectly expressed. Drugs, alcohol, tv, shopping - it matters not, they are all false gods that will never bring the peace we seek. Facing the pain relieves the need to numb - to a degree at least and it is something that improves with practice. Facing the pain and uncovering the skeletons you wrote about in another of your poems. Otherwise, and no matter what our addiction, there will never be enough of the substance to fill our hunger!
