Mind at War

Mind at War

A Poem by Will
"

An internal dialogue of sorts

"
There's a war that is waging,
as explosions pierce the night.
Two sides, angrily opposed,
to no end they will fight.

But this isn't a war of nations,
neither factions nor religions.
This is a war of the mind,
torn between decisions.

The Right prefers free thinking,
"Follow your heart," it will say,
"What's the worst that could happen?
Just do it as you may."

The Left leans towards logic,
"Do the math, don't trust your gut;
the heart's just a blood pumping sap!
Use your head, or end up in a rut."

Left and Right shout each other down,
a never-ending debate.
Argument of the century,
in the balance is my fate.

So I wait for the conclusion,
as my temples throb with pain.
Hopefully this war of the mind
won't make me go insane.

this is the second of yours I have read and you are clearly a deep thinker with the ability to write worthwhile poetry. I wasn't keen on the two stanza's I have c & p'd as from what I read, I believe you are capable of better. Actually, the first three lines in the last stanza are good, it's just that last line which could be improved:

The Left leans towards logic,
"Do the math, don't trust your gut;
the heart's just a blood pumping sap!
Use your head, or end up in a rut."

So I wait for the conclusion,
as my temples throb with pain.
Hopefully this war of the mind
won't make me go insane.

Exceptionally well-written, Will. One of the best of yours I've read thus far. The dilemma you describe is universal and there's no easy answer. Of course, one can always flip a coin and then blame fate if it doesn't turn out well. Your next to last stanza can also be read as a perfect description of politics in Washington today.

An amazing depiction of the war between logic and dreams. Everyone has felt this at some time in their life, and you did a splendid job of bringing that to life through words.

yup..been there and done that. But I'm afraid I lost that war...I now come here for therapy because it's cheaper than prescription drugs.

This poem has the type of flow that I could just read and read and read, it's where the rhyme works so well that it just goes on from one thing to the next and could just keep going. I also, really enjoyed what this poem was saying, I think this idea of an internal war is something where you can't really get a proper resolution and I felt that your poem said this with there not being an answer at the end, just this hope they won't go crazy. All in all, really nice.

I really love the flow of your words and how it just slips right off. It's almost like reading a story or watching a fast-paced debate. The rhyming is superb as well, love this poem :) :) :)

This is exactly why my husband and I are a good pairing - he is completely Logical Left brained; I am (obviously) the Free-thinking Right. It's an important balance to strike, not easy within one's own mind.
A good and thoughtful poem, Will!
