The Lady in Red

The Lady in Red

A Poem by Selena Uptain
"

A woman goes to see her lover one last time.

The Lady in Red

Through winding streets at midnight’s toll,

Walks a lady with a darkened soul.

She enters the crypt where her lover lies.

A smile graces her lips, but does not meet her eyes.

She climbs into the coffin and lies down by his side.

She kisses his frozen lips and brushes his hair astride.

“Oh my love, I’ve missed you so.”

I’ve missed you too, as you surely know.

“Will we be together someday?”

There is only one way.

She pulls a knife from the folds of her skirt and draws it across her wrist.

Smearing her blood across his cheek and enveloping him in its bittersweet Kiss.

“Do you enjoy the warmth of my blood?”

Yes, my love, it feels so good!

“Will we be together someday?”

There is only one way.

Taking him deep between her legs and slowly sliding down.

Crying out with every thrust until in ecstasy she drowned.

“Will we be together someday?”

There is only one way.

“I know what I must do,” she said, “For the only way is this.”

Leaning down, she bestowed upon him Love’s final kiss.

“Will we be together someday?”

This is the only way.

Turning from him one last time she walked down the marble stairs.

She came upon the black Abyss and into it she stared.

“Will we be together someday?”

This is the only way.

She pressed the knife to her throat and felt its icy tip.

Slicing it quickly, choking on blood, and forward she did slip.

To the Abyss she fell as she bled.

Down, down went the Lady in Red.
