Know That I Too
We are never alone (a poem for mental health month)
Flesh

Flesh

A Poem by _mal

Deep
I gave myself a fright today, it
Didn’t hurt that bad
I have no feelings anyway but
All that blood
Leaking from my aching

Limb makes me

Chew my tongue over the

Sheets, pyjama pants that get
Washed too often

By someone that would notice

And be hurt by the outlines of

A bandage

Bright red stains all

Impossible

to get completely clean.

Me

I lie in the dark all day
Steel boned, they’re heavy
Weighing down the flesh
Protecting me from mattress

Springs, old music blaring protecting

Me from the voices all around

That set off the voices in my head.

And later I get up

Glide out to the kitchen, suck

Another cigarette down my swollen

Throat and stare blankly

At the fridge light, yellow

Like my fingers like

The fat I saw beneath my skin today

I shut that door again

And wonder why I feel

Nothing at all

This makes me think of schizophrenia.

The ending is really poignant:

At the fridge light, yellow

Like my fingers like

The fat I saw beneath my skin today

I shut that door again

And wonder why I feel

Nothing at all

This is very emotiv. There is also a lot of strong imagery, such as the way you've included yellow. Your use of sound is very good.

There's a familiarity to this I can identify with.
