Tribute to my professor of old English literature, mr. Denis J. Conlon Phd, who apparently is still active in the academic field because I found some links to his academic writings ...I hope he likes the way he is remembered.

Travellers taking Gulliver’s

Trips to the soul

Of Marlowe’s Faustus

 

Sold to afford

The fee to

A Paradise Lost

 

By the Mersey

As recalled by

The Liverpudlian Professor

 

In Antwerp

Still strolling the streets

Of Liverpool

 

Dreaming of swimming

The Channel rather than

Taking a dip in the pool

 

No yellow submarine

To the rescue of

The Liverpudlian slang master

Imagine your professor of 'The history of English literature' teaching in Liverpudlian dialect...
I loved the man! He was quite a character ... but often litteraly misunderstood by some students that were not all Beatle fans!
Well, whenever mr. Denis J. Conlon finds this, I hope he likes the way he is remembered by a former student who chose to leave university prematurely but still loves reading and writing in English rather than in her native language.

Enjoyed Gulliver's Travels, the symbolisms and comparisons of what it is to be human (differences that have fear attached)... we are what we dream to become... love the way you used your poetic language, imagery is vivid and references understandable. Your professor sounds interesting. I think those of us who truly understand poetry and English for that matter can cite a teacher from our past who drives us. I suspect that deep down, they are our muses.

Mr. Conlon should like the way he is remembered... This poem is a fitting tribute and really fun to read. Well done (:

I love the Beatles reference. I am a huge, huge fan of the Beatles and the Yellow Submarine especially. This is a great tribute to (I'm sure) a great man. Very cleverly written with classic and contemporary references to reflect a quirky character.

Well, truthfully, I think it could use fleshing out. The few words you use do not help capture the personality of this professor if he means as much to you as some of mine do.
Also - I think it would do better without the last stanza. If nothing else, it leaves the reader something to consider and ponder over and it does a better job finishing it than what you have here.

Prof sounds like a vigorous charachter, especially as he is clearly a swimmer. A love of English lit and swimming, what could be better? Love 'streets of old literature'. With such a dreamy nature, it's just as well he was not tempted to become an airline pilot. And delightful the tribute spans the waters, albeit at a little wider part, the Prof might dream of swimming.
