Face

Face

A Poem by Aidan Singletary

Who is this face that stares back at me?
A foreign heir to what I see
I do not recognize his glare
I do not like the way he stares

Stern veiwing eyes and
Long open heart

An unfamiliar palate; grace
An unforgiving nature; stays

Who is this unknown person? An unrecognizable glare, a foreign heir they might be... could this be the reflection of the person narrating? Sometimes when we look into the mirror, we might sometimes not recognize ourselves both literally ( if... for example you're tired, or wearing makeup) and metaphorically ( not recognizing your reflection or face can be a metaphor for growing up and going through great changes). I enjoyed this piece, it gave me some things to think about. Thanks for sharing!

To each of their own, one may come up with a context for this poem different from the last. Personally, it reminds me of Dr. Frankenstein for I had imagined him to be a miserable man who fell into utmost despair after the losses of his close ones. Perhaps this unfamiliarity is woven by guilt itself. A wonderful poem, author Aidan Singletary.

When a transformation occurs and begins to manifest itself it often changes the reflection in a day's morning mirror view, like that proverbial man in the mirror.

Great piece! The second stanza is my favorite; those lines pop. I'm left to ponder the enjambed lines "long open heart / An unfamiliar palate" ... I like to ponder - love it!
