Child of the Night

Child of the Night

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

But then I gaze upon my child with the strength and the fire to fight I think of when I was so wild I shunned the day and loved the night

"

I have to wonder now and then

as the dreams I once held divine

Have left me just like other men

to age and wither on the vine

Where once I thought that I would be

so much further along in life

Now the dreams that I once could see

so cut me quick just like a knife

Perhaps the gods that rule my fate

have turned their backs upon me now

Lacking what I once thought so great

leaves me this truth to disavow

Where is the strength that gave men pause

where once I bent life to my will

When I was game for hell and cause

and drank until I'd had my fill

Be careful where your shadow cast

as the dimming light pays a toll

The day will come you breathe your last

when you will have to face your soul

But then I gaze upon my child

with the strength and the fire to fight

I think of when I was so wild

I shunned the day and loved the night

It makes me want to continue

to keep the Hounds of Hell at bay

Push the muscles and the sinew

to wake to face another day

Author's Note

Tate Morgan
I often think of my own end. It is hard not to feel the hand of time on me. Life has a way of wearing us down. I have outlived my own predictions by many a year. I once thought I would surely meet the end by the time I was thirty. I shall have to console myself with the thought that I might just live to be old lol.

"It makes me want to continue

to keep the Hounds of Hell at bay

Push the muscles and the sinew

to wake to face another day" This is genious as is the rest of this piece, Always a joy to reada your work but to see it fro a lightly darker perspective than you usualy write is incredible. Been wonderin how your poetry would read with a darker tone to it, now I know that it reads with an ominious note yes but still your positive message remains. It's like a stor cloud with a silver lining, only it's a silver cloud with a grey shadow. Just awesome my friend...

Thank you for reading my work
Within this piece I hear the quip of a person who has, quite simply, had enough of life and what it dares to throw at them. Fate has so long been the antagonist of said person that they simply do not perceive any reason to continue fighting because fate has given such an unlucky hand of cards, yet the same person again discovers the excitement of life in the eyes of someone that hasn't lived even nearly long enough to harbor feelings even remotely alike to the person, and this discovery incites memories of when life was astoundingly blissful. Well portrayed.

Thank you May we all find the joys of life that were once the memories of childhood Thank you
I hope that we all live to be old. Especially with your talent Tate, I don't want to even think of a time that I can not open up my laptop or pick up a book and read your beautiful, amazing, brilliant way with words. It's been a while since I've been interacting on this site, (off & on) since my mother passed. I've been writing, but not very involved. & life is already too short, that we must never give up, never give in and see where this journey takes us. You writing is an inspiration that motivates us all to be better writers and want more out of our works. Thank you for sharing this deep, emotional, intricate piece.

Thank you I will get through it
I surely never expected to be 60!
And yet, this October, I will be 64!!
Will they still need me...will they still feed me??

I have come to the conclusion that life is like this tremendous game we are all playing...about the time we think we have all the rules figured out and we know just what we're supposed to be doing...
The game is over...

I've been doing that for approximately 60 years now...it's worked so far...
Lacking what I once thought so great

leaves me this truth to disavow

Every line is so masterfully crafted, and I felt goosebumps rush up my skin as I read your last few lines. Children are the most important, innocent, loving beings that god has granted upon us, and they do indeed make us strive on and on. This poem is so pure and beautiful, one can't stamp a number on such beauty.

Thank you it came directly from my heart to everyone elses
this poem is didactic... sometimes when I feel like giving up, I think to myself that when I am old I don't want to cry over the dreams I did not actualize now and that makes me want to continue climbing whatever mountain even if I have nails beneath my feet...well penned and thanks for sharing.

It is in the moments when we look back and question that we are offered an opportunity to evolve or help the world evolve. Reflection affords us this chance to recall our life lessons, find meaning in the pain and lead others into the light.
