Contest Conformity

Rise up! Be free! Don't fall victim to society's idea of normalcy!

Assemblage of the jury,

here I stand before you,

brooding on the ineffable,

awaiting your execration,

cogitating my next move.

I’m proudly positioned before thee,

as an array of what is me.

I shall not bow before you,

nor reason, bend or break.

I’ll risk my own demise,

before conformity.

Revolt, I say!

Rise up, be free.

May your souls be rid of bigotry.

To blackened hearts, I grant you paint.

Let sunshine rain,

may words flow unbound.

One mustn't be abstemious.

Robotic enslavement awaits you.

Hypnosis will clutch your mind.

A prison will surround us all.

We must stand up and contest.

Rebellion is my choosing,

whether by infantry,

or an army of just me.

Protest I must, protect I will.

Fight for the oblivious, and

demolish the close minded fools.

You would make a great motivational speaker...hard not to be inspired by your words here...I don't think I'm a conformist but I've never gotten much acceptance for 'being myself' and so I'm constantly fighting off conformity's seduction...I really liked 'To blackened hearts, I grant you paint'...so many layers in that line beyond the central message...a most vibrant piece, nicely done :)

you know i never realize how powerful this poem could be to others. i always thought it was just a silly teenage rant, but i'm glad so many people can relate to it. i'm gonna have to pass on the public speaking thing :P a lot of people tell me i should be, but i'm afraid someday i might barf on somebody lol. everytime i get up to give a presentation on the paper i'm editor of i feel like i'm gong to pass out! thank you so much for your positive words! I too catch myself trying to fit in because i get so tired of being disrespected for who i am. we all are guilty of a wee bit of "conformity"

Always a pleasure :) That's the funny thing about writing, or any art for that matter...we just never know how something's going to be perceived...I get told the same thing actually...I was the editor-in-chief of my school's arts journal which required some public speaking...I could pull it off when it absolutely had to be done but it's never something I could do on a regular basis haha
