Between you and I

Between you and I

A Poem by Summer Mendez

 Between you and I,

We're in love with the same man.

With his long, shaggy brown hair,

Bright blue eyes,

His gentle touch

and his easy smile.

I've only ever seen you,

Spoken to you once.

But I know you very well.

He talks about you all the time.

You're brilliant and beautiful.

And kind of intimidating.

We're opposites, you and I,

I'm short,

You're as tall as he is.

Kissing you puts less stress on his neck. lol.

I'm a photographer,

You want to be a doctor, I think.

I overanalyze everything.

And I'm afraid.

Afraid to let him go.

Afraid that one day he'll wake up,

And he'll want only you.

He still has that picture,

The one of you in New York.

Tucked up in the visor in his car.

You're looking sideways at the camera,

leaning on him.

And he's looking at you.

You both look really happy.

I've glanced over at that picture a million times.

Wondered.

He doesn't realize it bothers me,

Though, I haven't said anything.

Because if it ever came down to you or me...

I don't know which way he would go.

Between you and I.

I'm terrified of it slipping,

and falling away.

I know you still love him,

And he still loves you.

It may not be the same love.

But things change....
