I Looked Into a Pond

I Looked Into a Pond

A Poem by Nathan Betterman

I looked into a pond the other day.

It was murky, green, and cold.
There was not much else to say;
And yet, it had much to behold.
There were no fish, no frogs, no flies,
No snakes or tadpoles.
But yet there my reflection lies,
Filled with many holes.
These holes were filled with black;
A black as dark as ebony;
They were no presence in that lake;
But they were a presence in me.
Those pieces that I blotted out.
That past which I hid.
Those things I do not talk about.
Such things I wish I had not did.
I stare and stare and stare,
Wishing such things weren’t so.
But as I pray, they’re still there,
Casting a dark shadow.
Should I let such things be?
Should they take control?
No, they are just a part of me
They do not make my whole.
I looked into a pond the other day.
It was murky, green, and cold.
“I am so much more,” I say,

“God loves me,” So I’m told.
