A Poem by sette

I started reading at an early age,

When most kids of my age were playing

with dolls and guns,

I was flipping the pages of a dog-eared novel

by Barbara Cartland.

I was mystified by three things,

no pictures, small print and too many pages.

I saw my mother reading it during her free time,

and curiosity always got me,

asking what the story is all about.

Little boys my age played with swords and pretend

to be  kings or knights.

Little girls my age played with dolls

that looked like princesses .

but here I am very different from them,

I was asking my mother,

what a dame means

since Barbara Cartland was considered as one.

I was asking her

if kings and queens were just make-believe.

The curiosity was the one that propelled me

to love books and become a bookworm

all throughout my teenage years

until now.

I was fascinated with different things

except mathematics and science.

The school library had been more than

a place for me to read books,

but also became a haven whenever I am in pain.

I turned to books when I am happy,

and especially when I am sad.

I was always broke,

because I bought books

more than I should.

It has been a habit

more than a hobby

and even if there is the internet,

I still find enjoyment

with a soft bound book beside me.

thank you for a wonderful review
nothing like reading a good book or having an actual conversation with someone ....all this technology has destroyed so much of that....e-books? ugh...i want to finger the pages as i turn them...feel that book in my hand...i want to talk to someone face to face, not on a computer or phone screen.
the texture of life has changed...and this poem is a refreshing look at holding on to some of the better things in life.

You will never go wrong seeking knowledge through books. It's wonderful you were encouraged to read at an early age. Too often young people only read if it is assigned by a teacher in school. You obviously love words....your poetry shows that. Lydi**

thanks a lot for the compliment lydi, and also for the wonderful review
A wonderful thing to be encouraged in children, sadly when I was young I wasn't encouraged and spent most of my time playing outside as children did in those days. I didn't really discover books until quite late on and now I can't see well enough to read them so a Kindle it is lol.
Reading expands your mind so keep on :)

At times books can become a very good friend to the lonely hearts out into the world. Nicely expressed ;-]

There's nothing like a good book to keep you company. I find enjoyment in them and always have. I enjoyed relating to this.

The only book out of my textbooks I have read is Barbara Erskine's "Midnight is a lonely place". I also find peace in reading book but when it's silence around me cause chaos around us hardly let us enjoy that!

i agree totally with you there my friend.
Love books, myself--though, in recent years, I don't read nearly as much as I used to.
Lovely piece, S; a most enjoyable experience!
