The Games Children Play

The Games Children Play

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

A bathroom sink overflow becomes a postbox.

"
How great to hear the gurgling sound
of running water, flowing free.
No longer pooling in the sink,
the fixer fixed it just for me.

My man who mends all things which break,
(well almost all), has helped the flow.
For weeks the basin wouldn't drain,
now crystal swirls to depths below.

Into the dark bend where he found,
a medley for a child's keen eye.
Where years before, a younger Beth
had played at postman and I Spy.

A treasure trove was found down there,
a Spanish coin, a Barbie's comb,
a pile of toothpicks, pink and white
had found a most unlikely home.

Those little things, a source of joy,
though Beth when asked was acting coy.

Ah, the pleasures of parenthood!! I can relate to this, so well, Chris.
Children can be so inventive , and expensive. Our son dug a hole in the garden and put the earth down the drain. Then our eight month old daughter scooted her potty around the bathroom with a wax crayon scribbling on the freshly emulsion painted wall. My response was less than poetic at the time.

I did and thank you Christine.
An unexpected but totally precious discovery of treasured memories found in the strangest of everyday places! The sweetness of a little girl’s mischievous play at a tender age. Chris, your Beth is introduced and nuanced so beautifully. Your love comes through each eloquent word and perfectly rhymed, lyrical verse. Love the imagery and the innocence. Lovely write!
