A Seasonal Love Poem

A Seasonal Love Poem

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

lace caps are a type of hydrangea with very delicate lace like blooms

"
In my garden you will find
the final fling of summer wine,
as weak and hazy sun bleeds through.

Damsons drop to stain the path.
Close by a birdbath overspills,
a thrush drinks slowly, takes its fill.

Purple heathers have replaced
that space where lace-caps caught the sun,
where now a spider's web is spun.

A finer spread you will not see
of drooping headed fuschia bells,
that tumble freely from their beds.

But when I see the cherry tree,
whose leaves have parted company,
to flirt with those of ochre hue,
with fondness I remember you.

This is such a wonderful, vivid poem. It is a sheer delight to read this this morning :) The summer has its own magic, leaves its own magic behind also - made me think on those autumnal cobwebs on the lesser warm days...stunning in its visuals :) Be well dear Chris :)

I had wondered by the title whether you were going to tackle all the seasons, but this Autumnal ode ended up being quite remarkable. I feel like I read this one, though, whether from you or someone else, I can't quite put my finger on it. But it seems familiar. Is this a newer version of an earlier poem?

Seasonal love! Quite novel. Love is unpredictable as sure as the Earth tilts to welcome the Solstice's.

Christine, it is so refreshing to read a poem with such great rhythm and meter, where the language isn't hackneyed. I enjoyed this poetic rhyming form immensely and look forward to reading more from you in the future.

Thanks for sharing. :)

No problem, Christine. Glad to be of service. :)
Lovely piece!--though my horticultural knowledge is sadly lacking; can't tell a daisy from a dandelion.
Did see a cherry tree, once.
Still, I dig your garden!

A magical trip through the garden. The trees are so pretty in cooler climes this time of year. Yes, the leaves fall and the petals too, but they will come back even prettier in the springtime! I liked the rhyming in this one. The imagery you employ is spectacular. Lydi**

This is so vibrant and breezy love poem....also when you say the cherry tree flirts...I feel a traditional-modern love going on inside your garden :D
