A Seasonal Love Poem

A Seasonal Love Poem

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

lace caps are a type of hydrangea with very delicate lace like blooms

"
In my garden you will find
the final fling of summer wine,
as weak and hazy sun bleeds through.

Damsons drop to stain the path.
Close by a birdbath overspills,
a thrush drinks slowly, takes its fill.

Purple heathers have replaced
that space where lace-caps caught the sun,
where now a spider's web is spun.

A finer spread you will not see
of drooping headed fuschia bells,
that tumble freely from their beds.

But when I see the cherry tree,
whose leaves have parted company,
to flirt with those of ochre hue,
with fondness I remember you.

This is such a wonderful, vivid poem. It is a sheer delight to read this this morning :) The summer has its own magic, leaves its own magic behind also - made me think on those autumnal cobwebs on the lesser warm days...stunning in its visuals :) Be well dear Chris :)

This poem gave me goosebumps - in a good way. Seasons, colors, flowers and other plants are such powerful metaphors in general, and are so well-used here! Even without the last stanza it would've been a nice poem, but then to connect the changes in nature with the changes in one's life, and the slow, gradual end of summer with the end of a relationship really made it perfect.

Thank you for allowing us a virtual tour through your garden.it's so vivid , descriptive and wonderful....there are so many things here....like the birdbath to the drooping headed fuschia bells to the cherry tree! Even the spider web.....it shows how efficient you are while describing the minute details....

Thank you for this beautiful seasonal poem revolving around your decorated garden.

And you too dear Sima and a big thank you :)
This one puts the reader in the midst of a garden toward summer's end. The descriptions of the flowers are beautiful, and the bird and spider complete the picture of the summer day. When we get to the cherry tree, however, a message comes through. The tree's leaves are starting to change, a sign that everything will soon be different than it was. The last line indicates a remembrance of one no longer in the picture, but who is recalled fondly. Change is ever with us on this plane, its reminders everywhere. When those reminders are pleasant ones, however, time's relentlessness is more easily borne.

Oh this poem is such a delight! I won't deny I really envy your keen eye for detail and your choice of the finest words to bring them to life on paper. (I can sit for hours in exquisite gardens and come up with naught) The last verse kind of brought me a surprise element that it wasn't just nature on the narrator's mind.

They will return again ,Chris. I do love cherry blossom trees. We have loads of them around here. The city lines streets and parks with them and they add a different look and feel to the place when in bloom. Plus they look great undressing too, like weather confetti :)
Sad, regretful words, at the beauty given, and the loss when its taken away.
