Extinguishing A Mood

Extinguishing A Mood

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Sometimes I burn a candle,
a saviour in a storm.
It dances in a pool of wax
to give my spirit warmth.

At times I play at teasing
to keep myself amused,
by breathing on its lucent flame,
I'm sure it feels confused.

Where do I want those shadows
to fall within the room?
Where do I want the brightened flame
to lift the late night gloom?

When all around is darkness,
the flicker of this friend,
eliminates the brooding thoughts
that randomly descend.

I praise the light you offer,
the solitude I choose,
but most of all I praise you for
extinguishing my blues.

This is another great favourite for me! Your words have for me, worked uniquely here, to personify the candle in such an amazing way that I identify with it like someone I love. Some people too, provide such solace, company, amusement, assurance and light. Kudos to you Chris!

Evokes a feeling of loneliness for sure. I can picture a room only lit by this candle. A big room with only one person in it. I liked the line "by breathing on its lucent flame, I'm sure it feels confused." Gave me flashbacks to when I was a kid blowing on a lit candle only so little that it wouldn't go out.

Anytme! This sit has much to offer. Lets hope we will be able to post continually.
It is wonderful when we find a light at the end of the tunnel even if it doesn't stay lit forever ...it's still a blessing :) Strength and love Chris for all your woes! Blessed be!

How thoughtful your response Queenie. Many blessings on you dear poet.

Amazing poem Chris loved the candle as a company, comforter and friend. Sadly sometimes that is the only companion for some people in this massive planet called earth. Tragic and true. Beautifully expressed. And thank you for sharing Chris.

Many thanks Dawn for your lovely uplifting review.

To extinguish a dark mood, one does not necessarily need a candle. A good friend can be the light we need to soothe the darkness. The personification of the candle in this one is brilliant, Christine. I liked it. Lydi**

I'm entranced watching the flickering flame of your candle. Being reminded that even though it may be a single candle it gives off a beautiful light.

Thank you - Dave

This poem packs romance, beauty and softness. I can take it metaphorically or literally. I'm assured of the saying:" Better to burn a candle than to curse darkness." Some special people do burn our blues and change our harsh moods.

This is very well constructed. Very intellectually emotive as well. Kinda reminds me of Platos cave allegory.
