Scarlet Skirts

Scarlet Skirts

A Poem by Chris Shaw

We count the cost of those we've lost,
their sacrifice, the price they paid.
The blood they shed, our honoured dead,
their hallowed memory will not fade.
So we recall with passing years,
the tears, a stream of solemn flow
and we remember all those deaths
in fields where scarlet poppies grow.

This is fresh and stirring, with the staccato villanelle cadence of In Flanders Fields. The men and women who live and die in military service are truly honoured here.

Take care and make sure you look after yourself. Hoping your healing is progressing well x
The fields were so steeped, the soil so suffused with the blood that still lends the scarlet poppies their colour. Our tears, memories and words, are the best tribute to them who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Beautifully written Chris and with a fetching title to the poem!
