Yesterday

A Poem by AaronFreitas

Have you ever

Just sat and cried

Reflected on memories

You wish had died

Have you ever

Lied to yourself

To hide the truth

Preserve your health

I sit all alone

Tears fall from my face

Music is playing

Help me escape this place

I dig for answers

Only I cannot find

How to erase

This pain from my mind

I close my eyes

Slow my breathing

So that I can hear

My heart still beating

With each beat

So full of life

Gives me purpose

Continue to fight

"Have you ever
Just sat and cried
Reflected on memories
You wish had died"
Sigh. I have! The more I try to bury them, the stronger and more poignant they got.

"I dig for answers
Only I cannot find
How to erase
This pain from my mind"
Been there too. I was searching desperately how to to ease the pain in my mind. The mind is a 24-hour 7-day-a-week thought-rambler of negative thoughts or painful memories. The heart has already forgiven or forgotten or is only failing to because the mind is dragging it down.

"I close my eyes
Slow my breathing
So that I can hear
My heart still beating

With each beat
So full of life
Gives me purpose
Continue to fight"
Those last two stanzas are very powerful. This is what spiritual teachers keep telling us to breathe in and out and pay heed to our body senses like our heart beating and being in presence with it. If our mind wanders, we gently come back to the beating of the heart and focus on being here and now. And so then we focus on life and purpose and no longer are we devouring ourselves in mindlessness.

Thank you Lynette.... appreciate the review :)
Wow. I don't know what you've been through, but you give the pain a body. I understand it, and can feel it. Very good job on this piece, sweetie!
