5. first circle turtle

5. first circle turtle

A Chapter by Jordan Williams

if you've got it, flaunt it

if you can't get it, you want it

so i've got all kinds of nothing

mostly hiding and coveting

forsake the world that left you shaken

or was it you who was first forsaken?

a first circle turtle

my only self is my hurdle

a shellacious impenetrable fort

a camouflaged face, the blendable sort

to match an inside no one told

if i'm a catch, i must be a cold

a lofty lifetime quickly envisioned

followed by the easy decision

to let the throat choked on lumps

weigh down the eyes, the head never up

i wanted to tell her i liked her style

but i couldn't survive her smile

a turtle trapped in the first circle

endearing sweetness left alone to curdle

when what i want is to be savored and cuddled

accents of affection more often muddled

reject the trends the setters respected

or was it you who was first rejected?
