Do You Dare?

Do You Dare?

A Poem by Not here

...a different kind of poem...a different kind of poem....a different kind of poem....a different kind of poem...a different kind of poem....

"
There's only death here;
there's only pain.
Why are you looking
among the insane?

They are just the shadows,
lurking in the shallows;
nothing but your friends,
wanting to reach new ends.
They want to meet you sooner;
they want to be your tuner.
They just want to lend
a helpful hand to send.

There's nothing hopeful;
there's nothing bright.
Why do you look in
the dark for light?

They just want to follow,
flying like a swallow.
Reaching for tomorrow,
filling you with sorrow.
They just want to talk to
and eventually walk you
up the road of thought
where memories are shot.

There's only chaos;
there's only harm.
Why do you cower
and look alarmed?

Why are you now crying?
Surely, you're not dying.
Why, then, are you weeping?
Pain has begun sleeping;
you are free from its grasp.
Why, then, do you now gasp?
What do you see behind you?
What do you see that you knew?

These are the people;
this is the place.
What will you do when
they touch your face?

Surely, they will not harm you;
surely, they would not dare.
Surely, they will not scare you;
surely, they touch your hair,
but never meant to harm you,
and never meant to scare.
Whenever they touch you,
think of it as a dare.
Do you dare to follow?
Do you dare to meet?
Do you dare to follow
walking memory street?

I must be one who does dare as I work with students with mental and emotional disabilities on a daily basis. Touching the hair and sniffing it seems a bit strange, but not nearly as strange as them picking up an arm and sniffing it...lol

I sense a struggle in this piece to give up or to keep going. I like that short stanzas and the back and forth. Really interesting piece.

thank you :) i appreciate the review
I love that you have such strong imagery to describe the misery and darkness, then take a step back to remind the reader that these are real people, not to be scorned or treated like animals. A very deep poem that again shows your compassion for the marginalized.

It is most certainly a different kind of poem. One with a view of how you see things. I enjoyed it. XX

always :) thanks for reviewing
We have a large gap in age and maybe that the reason, but this does not speak to me. Lots of good words and imagery. So sections i liked, but as a whole it left me wanting. But thanks for sharing.

david, I am bipolar, which used to be called manic depressive. Do you know why they quit calling it that? Because 'manic' is too similar to 'maniac.' See your authors note? a different kind of poem...written over and over? That's almost a book definition of manic behavior. I hope you understand why I can't read manic writing. Keep it going though, sir. Don't let me ever slow you down. Good luck david. take care...dan
